In a society with extremely low gun violence, or a low amount of any crime for that matter, it is only fitting that Koreans are obsessed with guns. They like shows with guns, video games, talking about them, and of course shooting hand guns at indoor gun ranges. Of course, we had to experience this for our self. One Saturday, all the foreign teachers from our school headed off to the Ilsan Shooting Club.
The club itself is hilarious. When you walk in to the fourth floor of one of the buildings in the shopping area, you are greeted by a huge floor to ceiling, wall to wall, mural of a black thug guy holding a smoking revolver. There are workers in suits behind the counter waiting to take your order. In the waiting room there are nice couches and tables with gun menus on them. Basically what it sounds like, a menu of the guns you could shoot, with prices, sizes and amount of bullets. There is a TV screen where you can watch the people in the next room shooting.
I picked a Smith and Weston revolver, so did Lisa. Dave and Jon got bigger guns with some more kick. We all got bullet proof vests and ear protection and went in the shooting room. Jen had done it before so she was there to be our photographer. Lisa was up first and she had a couple of misses on the bull’s eye and then she tore the metal clip holding the paper bull’s eye right off. It was hilarious, and she got to keep it as a souvenir. Dave’s gun shot the empty shells with a lot of kick behind the gun. They were really really hot and hit Jen in the foot and one hit me in the chest. Maybe we should also be wearing eye protection. Jon’s gun shot sparks out the sides with every bullet. When I was up my aim was terrible. I asked the Korean attendant and he flat out said “you’re not doing very well” haha. I aimed my last few shots better and got one pretty close to the centre.
After hilarious poses in our bullet-proof vests and holding out targets (and clip) we headed out for some galbi.
